NORMAN — Project Smoke Alarm is a joint effort of the Norman Fire Department, Little Axe Fire Department, and Norman Citizens CORPS volunteers.
On Saturday, the fire departments supported by community volunteers will conduct a program that offers free smoke alarms to residents.
The Norman Fire Department will focus on mobile home parks, where they will offer to provide and install free smoke alarms.
In the rural areas, Norman Fire Department Station Five combined with the Little Axe FD will canvass the rural areas and provide the same offer to residents. Community volunteers will also distribute informational materials on severe weather preparedness and family planning for emergencies.
Volunteers from OU’s Medical Spanish course in the Department of Modern Languages, Literatures, and Linguistics will assist in communicating in Hispanic households.
This project allows the Norman Fire Department Fire Prevention Bureau to heighten community awareness of the importance of having a working smoke detector in the home.
The program aims to ensure that all residences in Norman and Little Axe have at least one working smoke detector.
Project Team members will consist of firefighters and local community volunteers.
“Everyone is excited to help in this life saving project,” Norman Fire Chief James Fullingim said. “Having a combination of firefighters and local volunteers shows how the community can come together for such an important cause.”
For added protection, residents can call 405-245-9522 to verify the identity of any team members.
Teams will arrive between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. on Saturday, and residents should consider letting them enter their homes for the purpose of installing new smoke alarms.
Residents in Little Axe can sign up for a smoke alarm at the Little Axe Community Center, 1000 168 N.E., Norman, OK, 73026.
All residents of Norman are eligible to participate. During normal business hours you can contact the Norman Fire Marshal’s Office at 405-292-9780 between the hours of 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. Monday through Friday to apply for a free smoke alarm and schedule a time to have it installed.
