Panel OKs two bills regarding notification of parents for abortions

OKLAHOMA CITY — An Oklahoma House committee has approved three abortion-related bills, including two that make it more difficult for teenage girls to receive an abortion without notifying their parents.

The House Public Safety Committee approved those two bills and a third abortion measure that adds to the number of questions abortion providers must answer in a questionnaire gathered by the state.

One of the bills eliminates a bypass procedure in state law that allows girls under age 18 to get an abortion without notifying a parent if they get a judge’s approval.

Anti-abortion activists pushing the bill claim the state’s judicial bypass procedure is being exploited because some judges routinely approve the practice.

A second bill only allows the judicial bypass from a judge in the county where the girl resides.
