Inmate in hospital after fight

NORMAN — One inmate remained in the hospital Monday after a brawl Thursday night involving 17 inmates at the Lexington Assessment and Reception Center.

A total of four inmates were taken to the hospital after the fight, which involved homemade knives, but the other three have been treated and released, said Jerry Massie, Department of Corrections spokesperson.

The homemade knives were confiscated and charges may be filed, Massie said. The incident is under investigation.

The fight prompting the lockdown began around 9:30 p.m. and was under control by 9:50 p.m., Massie said. The fight occurred in one of the housing units, which is a medium-security area in the prison.

“Staff responded and they had to use pepper spray to gain control,” he said.

Five officers received treatment for minor injuries.
