NORMAN — Norman attorneys Sandee Coogan, Richard Stevens and Robert Don Gifford II were among 10 attorneys sworn in Friday to the Oklahoma Bar Association Board of Governors. Each will serve a three-year term as a board member.
Coogan represents Supreme Court Judicial District Five. She is a sole practitioner in Norman, focusing primarily on family law. She received her B.S. in education and her M.Ed. in educational psychology from the University of Oklahoma. She received her J.D. from the OU College of Law.
She currently serves on the Oklahoma Bar Journal Board of Editors, as well as the OBA Awards Committee. She is also a member of the Cleveland County Bar Association, serving as its president from 1999 to 2000.
Stevens is an at-large member of the OBA board. He has been an assistant district attorney in Norman since 1986. He received his B.A. in 1978 and his J.D. in 1982 from the University of Oklahoma. He is a member of the Criminal Law Section, the Rules of Professional Conduct Committee and the Oklahoma District Attorneys Association. An active member of the Cleveland County Bar Association, he served on its executive committee from 2010-2012. He is also a licensed attorney in Florida.
Norman resident Gifford represents Supreme Court Judicial District Three, which includes Oklahoma City, where he serves as an assistant U.S. attorney for the Western District of Oklahoma.
In addition, he is a lieutenant colonel in the U.S. Army Reserves and serves part-time as the chief judge for the Kaw Nation Tribal Court and is a Supreme Court justice for the Iowa Nation. He received his J.D. from the OU College of Law.
Other officers sworn in Friday were Shawnee attorney Jim Stuart, president; Tulsa lawyer Renée DeMoss, president-elect; and Lawton attorney Dietmar Caudle. Enid attorney Douglas L. Jackson also will serve a three-year term as an OBA governor.
Robert S. Farris of Tulsa will take the oath of office to fill the unexpired term of board member-at-large Renée DeMoss, after her election as president-elect. OBA President in 2012, Cathy Christensen of Oklahoma City, and OBA Young Lawyers Division Chairperson Joe Vorndran of Shawnee each took the oath of office to serve on the board for one year.
The 17,000-member Oklahoma Bar Association, headquartered in Oklahoma City, was created by the Oklahoma Supreme Court to advance the administration of justice and to foster and maintain learning, integrity, competence, public service and high standards of conduct among Oklahoma’s legal community.
