NORMAN — The picturesque Jimmie Austin OU Golf Course will be the setting for two huge events coming up later this spring and summer.
First, May 9-11, the course will host the NCAA women’s golf regional championships. Later, June 14-22, the U.S. Women’s Amateur Public Links championships will be played in Norman.
Both events will need a cadre of volunteers to help present the event and to assist in the success of it.
Head golf professional Rodney Young told Norman CVB staffers when we met to help out with details of the events in later 2012 that the women’s regional event will need people to cover about 200 shifts. These part-day shifts can include everything from serving as timers, checking in for registration and directing foot traffic to refreshments and other support staff.
These golfers will be competing in the central region. The course will be one of three sites — the Auburn University Club and the Stanford Golf Course are the other two venues — to serve as a prelude to the national championship at the University of Georgia on May 21-24.
The U.S. Golf Association will be conducting the volunteer training before the Publinks event in June. The two-day training will prepare volunteers to marshal, time, record scores, drive shuttles and more. There will be 156 golfers who qualify for the championships.
These types of sporting events will bring competitors and spectators from all over the U.S. Doing all that we can to make their stay in Norman a pleasant one can only help attract additional events of this magnitude and may also bring back some of these visitors for another trip.
