Hole on Main Street, interstate bridge repaired

NORMAN — A hole discovered in an eastbound lane of the Main Street bridge over Interstate 35 closed lanes Sunday evening on Main Street and I-35, with repairs going on through the night and into Monday afternoon.

Norman police officers discovered the hole in the right-hand, eastbound lane of the bridge at approximately 6:30 p.m. Sunday, prompting immediate repairs.

Norman’s Director of Public Works Shawn O’Leary said the hole was approximately 2 feet by 2 feet, a result of concrete deterioration in the bridge deck, and was not indicative of structural instability.

“Instances like this have happened about twice a year for the last three to four years, which is obviously why we’re due for bridge replacement,” O’Leary said. “We always do some testing during these repairs and found two other areas that needed immediate attention, so we’re on our third repair.”

Repairs were completed in the early afternoon, with all lanes reportedly reopened around 3 p.m. Monday.
