Sooners cruise against Pioneers

NORMAN — As home openers go, it was a beauty.

Playing host to No. 11 Denver Friday night at Lloyd Noble Center, the third-ranked Oklahoma women’s gymnastics team turned in their sharpest home-opening performance in program history.

Along the way, OU won all four disciplines and turned back the Pioneers 197.325 to 195.850.

Junior Taylor Spears was the night’s star, winning individual honors on the vault, sharing the top score of 9.9 with UD’s Moriah Martin, as well as on the beam with a score of 9.925. Spears also won the all-around with a combined score of 39.550.

A couple of Sooner freshmen claimed victories on the remaining disciplines.

Keeley Kmieciak’s 9.9 was the best score on the uneven parallel bars and Haley Scaman’s 9.925 took top honors on the floor.

While it was the best home opener in the program’s history, it was the Sooners’ 10th highest score in program history.

OU returns to competition a week from today in Fort Worth, where it meets Georgia, LSU, Washington and Oregon State at the Metroplex Challenge.
