Museum evacuated after backpack found

NORMAN — The Sam Noble Oklahoma Museum of Natural History was evacuated shortly before 2 p.m. Tuesday after a suspicious package, described as a black book bag, was found unattended.

The museum has since been cleared. The backpack was X-rayed and was found to be a normal backpack, said Catherine Bishop, University of Oklahoma spokeswoman.

Bishop said the OUPD conducted a search with the assistance of bomb-sniffing dogs. The Norman Police Department bomb team also was notified.

The museum was in Day 2 of its Spring Break Escape program. Tuesday’s events were scheduled from 10:15 a.m. to 3 p.m.
