Timberwolves football camp underway

NORMAN — Football

· North gridiron camp

Norman North football coach Wade Standley and the Timberwolves staff are hosting training this month at NNHS for athletes in grades third through ninth. The camps will be held Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday.

The seventh-ninth graders training camp is already underway and will end July 29. It runs from 9:30 to 10:45.m. Third through sixth graders runs July 7- 22 from 10:45 to 11:45 a.m.

The Raising the Pack Team Camp is July 12-19 from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Third through sixth grade is July 19-21.

· Former Tigers host camp

The HudlUp Quarterback/Wide Receiver Academy is hosting its 3rd annual skills camp July 11-12 at Norman High. It will run from 1-4 p.m. each day and is open for athletes 11-18 years of age.

Camp instructors are all former D-I quarterbacks or receivers. They include Zac Taylor, Kliff Kingsbury, Brian Callahan, Press Taylor, Nick Holz and Brian Thiebaud. Campers will be filmed on the Hudlup website and evaluated.

Softball

· MACU holding tryouts

Mid-America Christian University is having tryouts for next season’s fastpitch softball team. They are set for 9 a.m. July 7 at the MACU softball fields. For more information, call Robert Wakefield at 473-7899.

Camps

· City host summer camps

The Norman Parks and Recreation Department is hosting the 2011 Summer Sports Camp’s for kids in the Norman community. There will be nine different camps covering six different sports and one specialty sports camp, over the summer with well known athletes and coaches in Oklahoma instructing each camps.

The camp instructors include Nikki Dieball, head volleyball coach at Oklahoma City University; John McCullough, women’s basketball coach at Oklahoma Baptist and former player at OU and the Phoenix Suns; Shawn Yohn, cheer coach at Twist and Shout in Edmond and Rob Webb, former defensive coordinator at the NCAA Div II level.

Summer

· Adventure camp on tap

The Norman Parks & Recreation Department will be offering a summer long Adventure Camp until Aug. 23, for children ages 5 to 10 years old. The camp includes on site activities as well as weekly field trips to such locations as the “OKC Zoo,” “Hey Days” etc. Approximately twice per week campers will be able to enjoy swimming at the Westwood Water Park.

The camp will take place at the 12th Avenue Recreation Center which is located at 1701 12th Ave. N.E. Campers may be dropped off as early as 7 a.m. and must be picked up by 6 p.m.

Cost for the camp is $25 per day or $110 per week. Campers must bring their own lunch. For more information, contact steve.yohn@normanok.gov or 292-7275.

Parks and Rec

· Select team seeks players

A fifth and sixth grade boys basketball team is looking for players. They will play in the Optimist League and also compete in various other tournaments. For more information, call Jerry at 808-1445.
