NORMAN — The Timberwolves put together a solid effort for all four quarters on Thursday and were rewarded with a convincing 65-44 win over Class 5A’s 11th-ranked El Reno in the opening round of the Shawnee tournament.
Kairo Rutledge led North with 18 points, with most of his baskets coming on offensive rebounds. He was the biggest benefactor of North’s size advantage, and the Timberwolves were able to work inside-out through Rutledge.
“We were up there a long time waiting to play, and it would have been easy for us to come out flat,” coach Butch Roberts said. “But we didn’t. We came out quick and outside of a little bit of a lull in the third quarter we played really well in spurts.
Next up for North is No. 7 Stillwater, a game that offers the surging T-Wolves, winners of four of five, an opportunity to make a statement.
“We’re going to need some momentum because Stillwater is one of the biggest challenges we’ve faced all year,” Roberts said.
