SAN DIEGO — SAN DIEGO — Garrett Buechele and Cameron Seitzer both homered to ignite Oklahoma’s season-opening 7-4 victory over San Diego State Friday night.
The win marked the second straight season OU has started with a win, but marked the first on the road since 2006.
Friday’s took flight in the middle innings.
OU trailed 3-2 heading into the top of the fifth inning, but turned things around two runs in the frame. Buechele provided the big boost with a single to score Chris Ellison for the second run in the inning.
The Sooners, who got RBIs from six different hitters, pulled away with two more runs in the top of the sixth on RBI singles from Craig Busheyhead and Ellison, who went 2-for-4.
The depth of OU’s pitching staff was revealed. The Sooners sent four hurlers to the mound and three relievers combined to allow just one run.
Jeremy Erben picked up the victory in relief. He threw four innings, scattering five hits, and allowing just one run. Brandon Bargas tossed a scoreless eighth inning before turning the ball over to Ryan Duke.
The Sooners’ closer gave up a hit, but locked up his first save of the season.
Starter Zach Neal lasted three innings, giving up three runs on three hits.
Addison Reed took the loss for the Aztecs. He allowed four runs off five hits over 42⁄3 innings.
The win came in the opener of a four-game series with the Aztecs. The teams play a double-header beginning at 3 p.m. today.
