Oklahoma added the first player to its 2010 recruiting class on the first day of the basketball signing period. The Sooners inked T.J. Taylor, a shooting guard from Denison, Texas, Wednesday.
"T.J. is a strong left-handed guard who can play both guard positions," OU coach Jeff Capel said Wednesday. "He's very physical and he can shoot it. "One of my favorite things about him is that he loves to play, he loves to compete."
ESPN.com ranked Taylor as the No. 71 overall player in the class of 2010, Rivals.com had Taylor at No. 91 in its top 100.
Taylor averaged 27.1 points, 5.0 assists and 3.0 steals-per-game last year for a 21-11 Denison squad that advanced to the area round of the Class 4A state tournament. He was named his district's offensive player of the year the last two seasons.
"I coached him the last three years and I think he's really special," former Denison coach Scott Curran, who now coaches at Fort Worth's Byron Nelson High School. "As a player, he can do so many different things. I think the thing you'll see out of him at the next level that you might not see so much at the high school level is his court vision. He makes everyone around him look better."
The Sooners are expected to add at least one more player during the early signing period. Cameron Clark from Sherman, Texas, has verbally committed to OU and is expected to sign later this week.
Clark is No. 18 in ESPN.com's top 100 and ranked No. 30 by Rivals.com.
The Sooners are recruiting other nationally-touted prospects including guards Doron Lamb and Ray McCallum, whose father was an assistant at OU from 2004-2006. The Sooners are also pursuing forwards Terrence Jones and Harrison Barnes.
Barnes, who is from Ames, Iowa, is widely considered the nation's top recruit. He's expected to announce who he will sign with on an ESPNU Signing Day Special Friday. The show runs from 1-3:30 p.m.
