LAHAINA, Hawaii — De’Andre Haskins scored 32 points to lead Division II Chaminade to an 86-73 upset of Texas on Monday night, 30 years after the tiny school made its mark on college hoops with its famous upset over top-ranked Virginia.
The win was just Chaminade’s seventh at the Maui Invitational since the tournament started in 1984. The host team has lost 76 at the tournament in that span.
Haskins also had nine rebounds as the Silverswords (2-2) turned a tight game in the first half into a blowout. Kevin Hu, a Taiwanese freshman, scored 16 points in 14 minutes off the bench.
Texas (2-1) shot 46.4 percent for the game after making just one of eight 3-pointers in the first half. The Longhorns finished with 18 turnovers compared with just 10 assists, and made less than 57 percent of its free throws.
Chaminade led at halftime after battling back from two separate deficits of seven or more points each. The Silverswords fell behind 8-0 after missing their first 10 shots.
Chaminade picked Texas apart in the second half, not allowing the Longhorns to score consecutive baskets until less than 7 minutes remained in the game. A pull-up jumper from Hu with 6:23 left gave Chaminade a 19-point lead at 64-45.
Texas pulled to within nine on a 3-pointer from Julien Lewis with 2:16 left, but could get no closer. In the closing minutes, Texas had flashes of superior play, generating turnovers with pressure and stopping basic possessions, but the effort meant little by then.
When Chaminade upset Virginia, it was an 800-student NAIA school and didn’t even have its own gym.
Today, the Catholic school a few miles from the beaches of Waikiki has 1,200 students.
Indiana 66Georgia 53
NEW YORK — Victor Oladipo had 15 points and eight rebounds to lead No. 1 Indiana to a 66-53 victory over Georgia on Monday night in the semifinals of the Progressive Legends Classic at the Barclays Center.
Jordan Hulls and Christian Watford both had 14 points for the Hoosiers (4-0) and they were the ones who finally started hitting from long range as Indiana established control of the game.
The Hoosiers will face the winner of the game between No. 11 UCLA and Georgetown for the title on Tuesday night.
Kentavious Caldwell-Pope and Vincent Williams both had 14 points for Georgia (1-3), which lost its third straight.
The Hoosiers, who came into the game shooting 39.4 percent from 3-point range missed 11 of the first 12 shots they took from behind the arc. Watford hit a 3 with 10:06 left to end the shooting slump and extended Indiana’s lead to 45-40.
N. Carolina 95Miss. State 49
LAHAINA, Hawaii — Leslie McDonald scored 21 points as one of five North Carolina players in double-figures in an easy 95-49 win over Mississippi State on Monday at the Maui Invitational.
P.J. Hairston had 18 points, Reggie Bullock had 16 points, and Dexter Strickland and James McAdoo each scored 10.
Roquez Johnson led the Bulldogs with 12 points.
The Tar Heels scored the game’s first nine points and led 29-6 in less than 10 minutes. Mississippi State never came closer than 20 points behind after that. A fade-away 3-pointer from Hairston put UNC up 42 with 5:30 left in the game.
Mississippi State made just seven shots in the first half and shot 28.3 percent for the game.
North Carolina next faces Butler, which topped Marquette on a buzzer-beater 3-pointer earlier Monday.
Georgetown 78UCLA 70
NEW YORK — Markel Starks scored 23 points and Georgetown beat No. 11 UCLA 78-70 in the semifinals of the Progressive Legends Classic on Monday night at the Barclays Center, spoiling the college debut of Shabazz Muhammad.
Otto Porter had 18 points, 11 rebounds and five assists for the Hoyas (3-0), who will face No. 1 Indiana in Tuesday night’s championship game. The Hoosiers beat Georgia 66-53.
The Hoyas opened the second half on a 12-0 run — with Greg Whittington hitting two 3s — to take a 43-29 lead, their biggest of the game.
The Bruins (3-1) were within 59-53 on a 3-pointer by Norman Powell. But the Hoyas went on a 7-1 run that was capped by a hook shot by Nate Lubick with 6:17 to go. The Bruins did get within 77-70 on a 3 by Muhammad with 50 seconds to play.
UConn 77New Mexico 71
ST. THOMAS, U.S. Virgin Islands — Shabazz Napier and Ryan Boatright each scored 16 points to lead No. 23 Connecticut to a 77-71 victory over Wake Forest in the Paradise Jam on Friday.
Napier scored eight of his points during a 10-0 run midway through the second half that gave the Huskies (3-0) a 59-52 adcantage with 7:56 left.
Wake Forest (1-1) would get to within four (73-69) on a Travis McKie 3-pointer with 53 seconds left. But Napier knocked down four free throws over the final 28 seconds to clinch the win.
Daniels added 12 points for the Huskies and junior center Enosch Wolf added a career-high 12 points and six rebounds off the bench.
Codi Miller-McIntyre led the Demon Deacons with 21 points, C.J. Harris added 17 and McKie 16.
