Brookhaven Run sees new 5K state record

NORMAN — The 25th annual Brookhaven Run took place Saturday morning in Norman.

Aron Rono of Santa Fe, N.M. collected $2,000 by winning the race and setting a new 5K state record with a 13:51 finish time.

Rono broke Philliman Hanneck’s 16-year-old state record of 14:07.

Samuel Kosgei, also from Santa Fe, finished in second place in 14:09. James Kirwa, Mark Thompson and John Kosgei rounded out the top five with times of 14:30, 14:45 and 15:05, respectively.

Tone Hjalmarsen took the top place in the women’s race in 17:10.

Joanna Fiddler, McKale David, Jenny Graef and Lana Kelley were the next four women’s finishers in 17:20, 17:24, 17:36 and 17:45, respectively.

Including the prize money for breaking the state record, over $5,000 was given away in prize money to the top eight male and female finishers and master’s champions.

Close to 1300 runners participated in the 5K race, which started and ended at OK Runner in Brookhaven Village.

The race benefitted the Norman High School and Norman North High School cross country programs with each school receiving about $4,000.

OK Runner, First Bank & Trust Co. and Andy Alligator’s Fun Park served as the major sponsors for the Brookhaven Run.
