NORMAN — Peyton Gavras against the Jenks secondary — Jenks’ starting defense has not given up a touchdown in its last six games, and Gavras enters the 6A title game having thrown for 37 this season.
Gavras is Class 6A’s leading passer, having thrown for 3,229 yards this season. Behind him, the T-Wolves have scored at least 16 points in every contest. Jenks, on the other hand, hasn’t given up more than 14 points to any team from Oklahoma this year.
The discrepancy sets up what will be the title game’s most vital matchup. Will Gavras and the high-flying North offense be able to come close to last week’s 49-point performance against Owasso, or will the Trojans slow the T-Wolves enough to turn the game into a defensive battle?
Jordan Evans in the return game — One by one, each of North’s opponents this postseason have learned the dangers of kicking the ball to the latest Oklahoma commit.
Evans has returned a kick or punt for a touchdown in each of North’s postseason contests, and has returned five for scores this season.
The Trojans will likely try to do their best to keep the ball out of his hands, but it’s a strategy that has been tried unsuccessfully before. Each of Evans’ scoring returns in the playoffs has changed the game for the Timberwolves. Will he get a chance to do the same tonight?
The battle along the line — Jenks has used a very simple formula for winning this season. The Trojans hand the ball off to Trey’Vonne Barr’e and let him follow his dominant offensive line down the field.
It’s a gameplan that has the Trojans averaging 250 yards a game on the ground, and has led to Barr’e racking up 1,947 yards and 27 touchdowns this season.
For North to slow Barr’e, the Timberwolves will have to win at the line of scrimmage. Will North be up to the task, or will the Trojans simply overpower them as they’ve done to every opponent during their 11-game winning streak?
