STILLWATER — Marcus Smart scored 21 points and hit the winning layup with 3.1 seconds left to lift Oklahoma State to a 78-76 victory against Iowa State on Wednesday night.
Smart zipped back and forth beyond the free throw line trying to lose Iowa State’s Will Clyburn before knifing into the lane and releasing a runner over Georges Niang that banked off the glass and in for the Cowboys (14-5, 4-3 Big 12).
Tyrus McGee missed a desperation 3-pointer at the buzzer for the Cyclones (14-6, 4-3), who had two chances in a wild final few seconds. For a moment, it appeared Chris Babb would have a chance at two free throws to tie it up with less than a second left before officials huddled and ruled that Iowa State should instead get the ball out of bounds.
Babb ended up with a season-high 19 points to lead Iowa State.
Babb stepped to the free-throw line and was ready to shoot a one-and-one before John Higgins and his crew gathered and ruled that Le’Bryan Nash’s foul was an offensive foul and shouldn’t result in free throws. Babb got in front of Nash to catch a long inbounds pass, and Nash shoved him in the back as the ball was in the air to bring on the whistle.
Instead, Babb inbounded from near midcourt, and McGee launched a running 3-pointer that was off-target.
No. 18 Kansas State 83, Texas 57: Thomas Gipson had 17 points off the bench, Angel Rodriguez added 11 points and eight assists, and No. 18 Kansas State routed Texas 83-57 on Wednesday night to snap a two-game skid.
Omari Lawrence also scored 12 in a reserve role for the Wildcats (16-4, 5-2 Big 12), who built a 38-19 lead by halftime despite playing long stretches without three key players.
Rodney McGruder, the Big 12’s third-leading scorer, picked up two fouls in less than 2 minutes and spent the rest of the half on the bench. Martavious Irving joined him with two fouls moments later, and Will Spradling went to the locker room after getting smacked in the head.
Women, Baylor 90, Texas Tech 60: Brittney Griner set the Big 12 women’s career scoring record on Wednesday night, finishing with 40 points in top-ranked Baylor’s 90-60 victory over Texas Tech.
It was the fourth career 40-point performance for Griner, who also had 15 rebounds for her 51st career double-double.
Griner passed Oklahoma State’s Andrea Riley for the record while scoring the first four points of the game, giving her 2,837 for her career. Riley had 2,835 points from 2007-2010.
Kelsi Baker scored 12 points for Texas Tech (16-5, 6-3), which had won four in a row.
Kansas 78, No. 23 Iowa State 75, OT: Angel Goodrich forced overtime with a 3-pointer with 16 seconds left in regulation, then scored seven of her team’s 13 points in the extra session, as Kansas erased an 18-point second-half deficit and stunned No. 23 Iowa State.
ISU looked to have the game in hand after Anna Prins’ layup gave the Cyclones (14-5, 5-4 Big 12) a 55-37 lead with 8:56 left. But the Jayhawks (13-6, 4-4) outscored ISU 28-10 the rest of regulation.
