Edmond North wins Max Williamson Invitational tourney

ARDMORE — Playing 36 holes in blustery conditions on one of the state’s best golf courses as well as the underrated public course across the street, the Max Williamson Invitational was no walk in the park for anybody but Edmond North Monday.

Three of the top five individuals represented the Huskies, who ran away with the team crown by a cool 50 strokes.

Norman North finished 10th in the 23-team field, six spots in front of Norman High, though it was the Tigers who offered up the best individual between the crosstown rivals.

That was Turner Howe, who opened with a 79 on the par-71 Lakeview course, before trudging over to the Perry Maxwell-designed Dornick Hills. Long one of the state’s most historic and demanding layouts, Howe fired off a 5-over par 75, one of the best rounds of the day on the esteemed private course.

Thomas Johnson, who was coming off a second-place medalist finish at the Jim McLean Invitational in Fort Worth, led the Timberwolves with rounds of 83 (Dornick) and 77 (Lakeview).

The course got the best of both local squads, with Howe the only player between both teams to be in the 70s in both rounds.

Edmond North’s Griffin Pierce (72-65 137) bested Edmond Santa Fe’s reigning Class 6A individual champion Max McGreevey (72-68 140) by three strokes for medalist honors.

Plainview, a school district located in Ardmore, finished second to Edmond North, shooting 621.
