NORMAN — Norman High softball coach Tim Gonzales has resigned as head coach of the fastpitch program.
Gonzales, who still plans on coaching the slowpitch team, submitted his resignation on Monday after making the decision over the weekend. Gonzales, who spent eight years as the head coach, has coached in the Norman School District for 16 years.
“I prayed about it over the weekend before I made a decision,” Gonzales said on Tuesday. “This has been a tough year in many aspects. I decided that in order for Norman High to get to the next level they’re going to need another coach and I’m not the man for the job.”
When Gonzales took over the program eight years ago, it was, as he described it, “one of the worst in the state of Oklahoma.” In his time as coach, the Tigers achieved a level of success, advancing deeper into the playoffs than ever before and becoming more competitive on a day-to-day basis. He also oversaw the improvement of team facilities, including a new scoreboard and bleachers.
“We built this into a very respectable program in the last few years,” he said. “Building a program takes a toll on you. I really don’t know what’s in store for my future, but I’m going to let God take control and do what’s best for my family.”
NHS Athletic Coordinator TD O’Hara now faces the task of replacing Gonzales. He said there is no timetable or candidates available yet, but that the administration will look to hire the best possible coach for the program.
“We appreciate Tim’s time and energy and the effort he put into making the softball program respectable,” O’Hara said. “He has some other things he would like to pursue, and we wish him the best of luck in the future.”
