NORMAN — Norman North receiver and sometimes-quarterback Channing Meyer suffered a minor injury two weeks ago, and coaches held him out of last week’s game against US Grant, bringing into question whether or not he would be back on the field this week.
Fortunately for the T-Wolves, coach Wade Standley said Meyer was held out of that game, a 56-0 victory over the Generals, just to be safe.
“He’s back on the field and will play this week,” he said. “We sat him out last week mostly as a precaution.”
Watching for district games: While Norman High will have its hands full with Southmoore on Friday, there’s another District 6A-4 game this week that will have just as much of an impact on the race for a district title.
Edmond Santa Fe, which sits atop the district standings along with NHS, hosts Lawton tonight in a clash of two top-10 teams. Edmond Santa Fe defeated Southmoore three weeks ago, and still has a game remaining against NHS on Oct. 19. With an NHS win and a Santa Fe loss, the Tigers could find themselves sitting a half-game ahead of everyone else in the district heading into the final month of the season.
“You’re going to start to see everything in the district take shape after this week,” NHS coach Greg Nation said. “That makes this a huge game for us.”
Must-win games: It’s not just the Norman schools in need of a win this week. Several area teams are in desperate need of wins this week to either cling to or improve their playoff chances.
Purcell (2-4, 0-3) is clinging to playoff hopes after falling to a surprising 0-3 in district play. The Dragons travel to Dickson (3-2, 1-2) this week to try to get a win. If the Dragons are to make the playoffs again, Dickson is one of at least two teams they’ll have to jump.
Washington (4-2, 2-1), on the other hand, will look to solidify its positioning in District 2A-3. There are five teams with a record of 2-1 or better in district play, including Comanche (4-2, 2-1), which travels to Washington to meet the Warriors on Friday.
