Linebacker Travis Lewis heads preseason All-Big 12 list

NORMAN — Oklahoma linebacker Travis Lewis was named Big 12 Conference’s preseason defensive player of the year Tuesday. The honor was bestowed on the senior after the preseason all-conference team was chosen by media who cover the league.

The Sooners placed eight players on the team, including Lewis.

On offense, wide receiver Ryan Broyles, center Ben Habern, quarterback Landry Jones and running back Roy Finch were named to the first team.

OU defensive ends Frank Alexander and Ronnell Lewis were both named to the first team along with cornerback Demontre Hurst.

Broyles also received a nod as the Big 12’s top punt returner.

Oklahoma State wide receiver Justin Blackmon was named the preseason offensive player of the year. The newcomer of the year award went to Texas freshman running back Malcolm Brown.

The eight honorees were the most of any team. OSU and Texas A&M both placed four players on the squad.

The media preseason Big 12 poll will be released today.
