NORMAN — Oklahoma tailback Mossis Madu was charged with driving under the influence of alcohol in the early morning hours Tuesday.

According to an OU police affidavit, Madu was driving a 2006 Jeep Commander and heading north on Jenkins when he made a left turn onto Boyd. The police officer observed him weaving over the center lane before he pulled Madu over.

The officer stopped Madu’s vehicle at Boyd and Chautauqua. The OU officer reported Madu had “red, watery eyes, slurred speech, poor balance and an odor of alcoholic beverage consumption on his breath and person.”

According to the affidavit, Madu, 22, admitted to having two drinks. He was then administered the standard field sobriety test before being arrested at 3:10 a.m. and taken to the Cleveland County Detention Center. Once there, he was given a breath test and he registered a 0.19. The legal limit is 0.08.

The misdemeanor charge was filed Tuesday in Cleveland County Court. Madu was released at 8:15 a.m.

Madu enters his senior season at Oklahoma vying for playing time behind starting runningback Demarco Murray. In three seasons he has racked up 160 carries for 724 yards and eight touchdowns. The arrest comes a week before players are scheduled to report for practice.

Madu is a 2006 graduate of Norman High, where he rushed for 1.513 yards and 25 touchdowns as a senior.
