NORMAN — Norman North hung tough, but Edmond Memorial star and Wichita State signee Shaquille Morris eventually wore the Timberwolves down inside. And when he did, the second-ranked Bulldogs were finally able to pull away from the T-Wolves on their way to a 75-41 victory.
North ran a zone and packed the lane in an attempt to contain Morris, and had success early. But the 6-8 senior was able to get North into foul trouble, and his guards were able to feed him the ball for easy layups and dunks.
It turned what was a 25-24 North lead two minutes before halftime into a 53-31 Bulldog lead heading into the fourth quarter.
“We played really well in the first half, but we couldn't throw the ball in the ocean in the second,” coach Butch Roberts said. “He [Morris] is a load inside. There's places where he catches the ball that you can't do anything but foul him or let him dunk it.”
For most of the first half the Timberwolves actually had the upper hand. After getting Jordan Woodard into foul trouble early, North was able to hit some outside shots and slow Morris enough to maintain a slim lead. But the shots went cold in the third quarter, and Edmond Memorial responded with a 24-3 run that put the game out of hand.
Freshman Marcus Dickinson led North with 15 points, many of them coming at the free throw line. Aaron Young led Edmond Memorial with 15 points while Morris had 14.
Next up for North is a home contest Tuesday with Southmoore, a team the T-Wolves defeated 63-49 two weeks ago.
Norman High boys 66, Del City 50: With a balanced effort and an efficient first half, NHS was able to cruise to a 66-50 victory over Del City on Friday.
Sam Blodgett led the Tigers with 16 points while Daniel Harper and Cooper Clark added 12 apiece, and nine Tigers made it into the scorebook in the team-oriented win.
The Tigers took control in the second quarter, when they outscored Del City 14-7 to take a 27-19 lead into halftime. They extended that with an explosive 22-point third quarter, and coasted to the win from there.
Del City 66, Norman High girls 64: A back-and-forth game ended on a disappointing note for Norman High on Friday, with Del City coming away with a narrow 66-64 victory.
NHS was in the game the entire way, but a second quarter in which the Tigers were outscored 20-10 proved to be the difference in the game. NHS had a balanced effort on offense, with three scorers in double digits and Bethany Cox leading the way with 21.
Next up for NHS is a trip to Westmoore on Tuesday.
