NORMAN — For Norman North seniors DJ Gasso and Luke Jones, the recruiting process may have taken different paths, but it will end in the same place for the two friends.
Both signed Wednesday to play baseball at Weatherford Junior College in Texas. Gasso will play on the left side of infield while Jones will roam the outfield.
Coaches first noticed Jones at a camp at Rice last summer and offered him a scholarship soon after. After deciding that he wanted to accept the offer, Jones began pitching the school to Gasso.
“As soon as I made my visit I knew it was where I wanted to be, and I wanted DJ to know about it,” Jones said. “He contacted them, and they gave him the opportunity. I’m excited to play there and get to go with a buddy.”
For Gasso, the choice boiled down to the program’s track record for extending careers after they left the program.
“They’re really good about getting guys to the next level,” he said. “That’s what drew me there.”
Long to walk on at OU: NHS quarterback Zach Long has decided to turn down offers from several small schools and instead walk onto the squad at Oklahoma.
Long, who hopes to one day coach, ultimately decided he’d rather be a part of the Sooner program where his father coached for six years than take a scholarship at a smaller school. At NHS, Long was just as much of a threat on his feet as he was with his arm, and he’s open to moving into whatever position he has to in order to help the Sooners.
Tulsa offers Prince: Norman North junior Payton Prince didn’t sign anything on Wednesday, but he is already drawing interest for next year’s signing day.
Tulsa offered Prince a scholarship earlier in the week, the first of what could be several offers for the 6-3 tight end.
“I visited on Saturday and I really liked the staff up there,” he said. “It’s a great school and they really care about the education, not just the football.”
Prince is holding off on a decision for now, but said Tulsa is in his top three.
Several players still undecided: A number of players at Norman North and Norman High signed with universities on Wednesday, but several have yet to make decisions.
At NHS, Blake Dean, Michael Beard, Ayo Oyesanyo, A’erion Hines and Boston Lewis are all undecided, while North’s Jack Davis and Justin Martin are also still considering their options.
All have drawn interest from several schools but are waiting to sign a letter of intent.
