Sooner women fall to Cyclones

AMES, Iowa — Where consolation is concerned, this is the Oklahoma women’s: It took a particularly bad night for them to finally lose their first conference game.

That was the story from Hilton Coliseum, where the No. 16 Sooners made less than a third of their shots and were nearly doubled up on the glass en route to a humbling 82-61 loss to No. 25 Iowa State.

OU fell to 14-3 and 4-1 in league play. ISU improved to 13-2 and 4-1. Both are tied in second place behind Baylor in the Big 12 standings.

The Sooners began the night 1 for 11 from the field and didn’t get much better, closing out a 31.7 percent (19 of 60) shooting night.

With senior forward Joanna McFarland playing just 25 minutes before fouling out, OU was outrebounded 47-27.

“I thought Iowa State was really ready to play and fired up and played really hard,” OU coach Sherri Coale said. “And I thought we were flat … We battled back from the early deficit, just missing shots, and then let it get away from us.”

OU didn’t hit its first shot until the game entered its sixth minute, yet as late as the 4-minute mark of the first half, they were within three points.

Iowa State led 39-28 only 1:06 into the second half. The Sooners were never any closer than eight points.

Hallie Christofferson led the Cyclones with 24 points and eight rebounds. Chelsea Poppens added 20 points. OU was led by Sharane Campbell’s 19 points. Aaryn Ellenberg added 16 on 5 of 17 shooting.

The Sooners are back on the court at 2 p.m. Saturday, concluding their season series with Texas.
