NORMAN — To get into the second round of the girls Class 6A playoffs Tuesday night, both the Norman High and Norman North girls were going to have to turn in upsets, one bigger than the other.
It didn’t happen.
North faced the steepest challenge, playing at second-ranked Edmond North. The T-Wolves played well, even on a night they lost 3-0.
It was a similar story for the NHS girls, Even as Mustang might have appeared a little more beatable than Edmond North. The Broncos prevailed 3-1.
Both teams must now look forward to next season.
n At Edmond North, it was the Courtney Dike show. Dike scored all three goals for the Wolves, netting them in the 35th, 44th and 60th minutes.
The Wolves dominated the flow of the game, outshooting the Timberwolves 17 to 3. Even letting three shots go by, North’s Skyler Mason turned in a big night in net, making 10 saves. Edmond North’s Hayley Harryman only had to make two saves.
“They’re really good,” North coach T.C. Flanders said of the Wolves. “They’re really fast.”
The North girls finished their season with an 8-7 record.
n At Mustang, NHS was at least in the game.
The Tigers fell behind in the 19th minute when Alissa Jones found the net, but pulled right back to even when freshman Lauren Goodman answered in the 33rd minute, assisted by Mackenzie Burkhart.
Tyler Barajas added the game winner for Mustang in the 52nd minute. With 3 minutes remaining, the Broncos picked up an insurance goal.
NHS coach Bob Byers never quit liking his team.
“It was a really tough game,” he said. “The girls played really hard. I was proud of the effort.”
