NORMAN — The Class 6A softball championship game will take place 7 p.m. Monday after being rained out Saturday evening.
The title game between Moore and Edmond North will crown the 6A champion. Moore is looking to win its first title in five years after upsetting Broken Arrow 3-0 on Friday to advance to the championship game.
White has big game to lead CCS: Community Christian moved to 6-1 on Friday night with a big, 47-12 victory over Sunrise Christian. And running back Nate White was a big part of the reason why.
White carried the ball 31 times for 244 yards and three touchdowns in the win, taking the Royals on his back in the second half as they fought to protect a lead built in the first half.
Turnovers fuel North victory: Norman North’s victory over No. 3 Edmond North is all the more impressive when you consider the way the Timberwolves achieved it.
What had been labeled an inconsistent offense was anything but on Friday night, with the T-Wolves putting up 49 points against the Huskies, who had allowed just 11 points a game heading into the contest.
Most of the points came on deep passes thrown by quarterback Peyton Gavras, who threw perfect pass after pass down the field to beat the Edmond North secondary.
“Peyton has continually gotten better week after week,” coach Wade Standley said after the game. “There’s no question he has a great touch and knows where to put it down the field.”
And the defense was even more impressive. The Timberwolves forced four turnovers, three of which came on interceptions, including a pair by DJ Hicks. The turnovers gave North the momentum time and again after it appeared Edmond North had snatched it back.
Penalties doom Southmoore: Norman High was at its best against Southmoore on Friday, but it didn’t hurt the Tigers that the SaberCats did their best to beat themselves.
Southmoore committed 17 penalties in the game, 10 of which came in the first half. The 72 penalty yards amassed by the SaberCats in the half stymied several drives and helped to give the Tigers favorable field position.
“A lot of guys looked tired,” Southmoore coach Jeff Brickman told his team after the game. “And when you’re tired you get a lot of penalties. That’s something we’re going to fix.”
Edmond Santa Fe victory sets district outlook: Lawton entered the season as one of the top teams on the west side of the state, but consecutive losses have dropped the Wolverines out of the top 10 and likely out of the running for the District 6A-4 title.
And last week’s loss to Edmond Santa Fe was downright bad. Santa Fe jumped out to an early lead and never looked back as the Wolves blew out Lawton 68-28.
Norman High meets Santa Fe this week in a battle of district unbeatens, and the Tigers will play Lawton in the last week of the season in a game that will determine playoff positioning.
