School board moves to bid phase on Alcott roof

Transcript Staff Writer

The Norman Public Schools Board of Education has decided to proceed with the bid phase for replacing the Alcott Middle School's north gymnasium roof. Board members made the unanimous decision Monday night during a regular board meeting.

The roof suffered extensive damage when one of the main beams failed in December and collapsed. The structure collapse is believed to be a result of a buildup of ice and water on the roof that led the beam to fail and fall on the building.

Bill Kaighn, president of Kaighn Associates Architectures Inc., said the project is estimated to cost $491,941.36. The sum is about $40,000 higher than the total that Kaighn presented to the board earlier.

Kaighn blamed the increase on elevating construction materials costs.

Superintendent Dr. Joe Siano said the renovations will be paid from capital improvements funds, FEMA and insurance. FEMA should cover about $350,000, and the district is expected to receive $100,000 from insurance coverage.

"We are hoping for some additional funds," Siano said.

He added that NPS appreciated the quick response from FEMA officials.
