W. Chase Lawson, Norman North High School, and Kaylie Kristine Eckert, Norman High School, have been named students of the month by the Norman Rotary Club.
The Student of the Month program recognizes outstanding Norman and Norman North High School seniors who promote the objects and principals of Rotary International. Each senior chosen as a student of the month will be eligible for one of two $1,000 scholarships awarded to a student from each school in May 2008.
Lawson's experience with the Rotary Youth Leadership Awards Camp (RYLA) allowed him to develop his leadership skills and gave him the confidence to step out and try new things, he said. Most notably, he pursued the opportunity, and accepted a position as page in the State Legislature for Oklahoma Rep. Scott Martin. Chase participated in United Way's 4 REAL Youth Leadership and Teen Advisors of Norman (TAN) Programs and the Norman Chamber of Commerce Tomorrow's Leaders. He plays baseball and is featured as one of the faces in the 2007 Susan G. Koman Men of Oklahoma Breast Cancer Calendar in honor of his grandmother, a cancer survivor. His parents are Mariann and John Lawson.
Eckert believes that her experience with Norman High School's Student Congress helped hone her organization, writing and public speaking skills and will allow her to be successful in any field she chooses to study in college. She holds the office of Student Congress treasurer, and serves as vice president of the Key Club and captain of the Varsity Pom Squad at Norman High. She is a member of Youth Envisioners and Interact, Rotary International's service club for young people ages 14-18. As a volunteer, she supports Second Chance Animal Shelter, the Salvation Army bell ringing program and reads to Adams Elementary School students. Her parents are Bryan and Suzie Brewer.
The Norman Rotary Club, chartered May 1, 1919, is Norman's oldest service organization. The club has a membership of more than 160 business and community leaders. With their mission of "Service Above Self" Norman Rotary Club members provide monetary and volunteer support to a number of local, national and international causes.
