NORMAN — Community Action Ministries has been hosting the free local mission, CAMps, for 11 years. Local teens have logged in more than 156,800 hours of volunteer time since its conception in 1999 and have helped more than 35 different local non-profit agencies.
CAM has already held one local CAMps this year. Their second CAMp begins Wednesday and continues until Saturday and will be hosted by McFarlin Methodist Church.
A third CAMp will be Aug. 11-14, and will be hosted by St. Joseph’s Catholic Church.
The CAMps start on 8:45 p.m. Wednesday and go until 8 p.m. Saturday. The CAMp maxes out at 30 participants.
Participants for the overnight CAMps must be out of sixth grade or older. The participants will be split into small groups to go to the work sites, and will work from 8:45 a.m. to 4 p.m. Thursday through Saturday.
The group will help a variety of organizations, such as HUGs (serving the troops), YWCA, Parent Assistance, Feed the Children, The Oklahoma City Regional Food Bank, NAIC, Full Circle Senior Citizen Center and Little River Zoo.
Evenings are filled with the Youth Advisory Council (YAC) leading praise and worship service as well as evening devotions. There also will be times for team building activities.
Anyone interested in joining in the last CAMp for the summer is invited to contact Donna Hooper at 329-8041 or e-mail her at donna@communityactionmissions.com. July 28 is the deadline to sign-up.
Parent permission forms and adult volunteer forms may be downloaded from their website, www.cam-inc.net.
