It is time to start entering for the Great Western Feedout of 2010. For those of you not familiar with it, the Great Western Feedout is a producer information feedback program that allows cattle producers the opportunity to evaluate the genetic merit of the calves they produce for feedlot performance and carcass value following weaning and a winter stocker program.
There are a few entry requirements. The producer will consist of five or more steers, with a maximum of 40, born after Jan. 1, 2009. All steers must be approved through CattleLOG Age and Source Verification Program prior to delivery at the feed yard. Steers should be 45-day weaned, vaccinated, bunk-broke, dehorned and castrated prior to delivery. The Oklahoma Quality Beef Network protocol for vaccination and preconditioning is highly recommended for fall weaning prior to winter grazing. The last requirement is an entry fee of $25 per producer group.
The entry deadline is Friday. Complete rules and details can be found at beefextension.com or by contacting your local extension office.
If you have any questions or would like additional information on the feedout or the Oklahoma Quality Beef Network, contact Matt Stockman, agriculture educator, at the Cleveland County OCES office at 321-4774.
