Sooners right the ship with win over Bears

NORMAN — Coming off a pair of disappointing home-court losses, including a five-setter to Kansas just two days earlier, Oklahoma got back on track with a 3-0 sweep of Baylor on Friday night at Howard McCasland Field House.

The Sooners topped the Bears via three identical 25-20 sets.

OU improved to 15-6 overall and 4-2 against Big 12 Conference competition.

“It was a good bounce-back match for us,” OU volleyball coach Santiago Restrepo said. “The girls were calm out there tonight, which was good to see. We didn’t put too much pressure on ourselves. We just went out there and performed.”

The Sooners got 18 kills from Sallie McLaurin and 18 digs from libero Maria Fernanda, who moved her career dig total past the 2,000 mark.

Fernanda is already atop the Sooner career dig list and at 2,006 after Friday’s performance, resides in the top five in conference history.

“It means a lot for Oklahoma to have a player like Maria, and for her to reach this point in her career,” Restrepo said. “She’s a kid that doesn’t get a ton of recognition. I think that is a player that a lot of people should look to.”

Setter Julia Doyle dished 32 assists, in addition to compiling a team-best .500 hitting percentage.

The Sooners are back on the court Wednesday night at Texas Tech.
