Sooners triumphant against Bearcats in return to home mat

NORMAN — Wrestling at home for the first time in exactly a month, Oklahoma improved to 4-1 in dual matches with a fairly easy 31-9 triumph over Binghamton on Sunday evening at Howard McCasland Field House.

The No. 10 Sooners claimed seven of the 10 bouts, in addition to collecting a technical fall from 141-pounder Kendric Maple, who gained a 22-5 edge over Binghamton’s Dan Riggi, as well as a pinfall from 174-pound freshman Matt Reed, who put the Bearcats’ Ben Price’s shoulders on the mat at the 1:48 mark.

OU coach Mark Cody was happy to see the Sooners start strong, with a 12-9 decision from 125-pounder Kyle Garcia over Patrick Hunter and a 13-4 major decision from Cody Brewer over Binghamton’s Derek Steeley. Brewer started fast, gaining a takedown just 7 seconds into the bout.

“Overall, I think it was pretty good for us,” Cody said. “I was really stressed about those first couple of weight classes, but getting through that and coming out with a couple of wins was good for us going forward.”
