Sooners still streaking

It’s only March, but Oklahoma is ready for conference play. The only problem is the league is based on the West Coast. The Sooners rolled to a 9-6 victory over California Monday afternoon at L. Dale Mitchell Park. The win was their sixth in eight games against Pac-10 Conference teams.

The Sooners (13-3) swept a three-game series from UCLA over the weekend and split a four-game series with Washington State last month.

Monday’s victory mirrored OU’s recent play. Nothing flashy, but timely hitting and pitching.

First baseman Cameron Seitzer had the big afternoon, going 3-for-3 and driving in four runs. The freshman blasted a solo home run in the fifth inning and put the game away with a three-run double in the seventh.

“It was a big situation with two outs and the bases loaded. I was just trying to put the ball in play somehow,” Seitzer said. “I got a fastball and took advantage of it.”

The victory was the Sooners’ sixth straight and came in their sixth game in the last seven days. They’re not showing any signs of cooling off.

Casey Johnson also went 3-for-4 with an RBI and Ross Hubbard went 2-for-4 and drove in a run for the Sooners.

Tyson Seng (2-0) relieved J.R. Robinson in the fifth inning and earned his second win of the season. Seng blanked the Bears until the ninth inning and gave up two runs off three hits.

California (8-5) made things interesting in the ninth inning, rallying for four runs. Jarrett Semier nailed down the final out.

The Bears’ starter, Kevin Miller (0-1), took the loss after giving up five runs off seven hits in six innings of work.

There will be no rest for the Sooners any time soon. They face Houston Baptist in a doubleheader at 3 p.m. today at L. Dale Mitchell Park. The two contests were originally scheduled as a two-game series, but a change was made due to inclement weather in Wednesday’s forecast.

Today’s games will mark 12 games the Sooners have played in 12 days.

“I think our guys have been fatigued a little bit. How can they not be after the games we’ve played during this stretch run?” Golloway said. “That goes back to having guys that like to play. When they have the opportunity to compete, they want to do it.”
