Stoops says he's staying put

BMIAMI SHORES, Fla. — Any hopes the Denver Broncos had of luring Bob Stoops into the NFL ended Saturday. Stoops said he’s not interested in being the Broncos’ next head coach.

“That’s a rumor that I have not heard and no one has contacted me about that so I don’t know anything about it,” Stoops said following OU’s practice at Barry University. “We’re preparing for a national championship and that’s all my focus and all my concentration’s on, so obviously I’m not a candidate. I’m sure someone might have told me other than you guys I was a candidate if I was.”

Earlier this week several Denver and national media outlets reported the Broncos were interested in at least discussing the job with Stoops. However, no OU officials have been contacted about about seeting up a meeting with the Sooner coach.

Denver, which fired longtime coach Mike Shanahan earlier in the week, has already lined up interviews with several NFL assistant coaches.

OU center Jon Cooper said the subject of Stoops leaving for the NFL hasn’t been been broached with the team.

“He (Stoops) hasn’t brought anything up,” Cooper said earlier in the day at the Sooners’ offensive press conference at the Marriott Harbor Beach Resort and Spa in Fort Lauderdale.

Stoops said there was no reason to.

“There’s no story. I’m not a candidate. This is the first I’ve heard about it,” the coach added. “Once it’s addressed with my guys it’s not an issue. My guys know that there’s a lot of stuff that’s said about me that isn’t true. There used to that.”
