ST. LOUIS — Four Oklahoma wrestlers are still alive after the first day of the NCAA Championships Thursday in St. Louis, while one Sooner’s season ended.
Zack Bailey at 141 pounds, Will Rowe at 149, Josh Weitzel at 184 and Joel Flaggert at 197 will compete in today, though none will be competing for a championship. Joey Fio at 125 was eliminated during the evening session.
Weitzel lost his opening match, but came back to beat Phil Bomberger of Penn State 4-2 to stay in contention for All-American honors. Rowe stayed alive by beating Binghampton’s Kyle Fried 11-5.
At 141, Bailey upset Iowa’s Dan Laclere in the first round, but was beaten by Iowa State’s Nick Gallick in the second round 10-7.
Flaggert, wrestling with a torn ACL, beat Boise State’s Matt Casperson 9-5 to start his day, but then lost to Maryland’s Hudson Taylor 7-0. Flaggert, a senior, is a two-time All-American.
Fio, a freshman, lost his first match to North Dakota State’s Eric Hoffman, 14-6, then beat Virginia’s Ross Gitomer 8-5. Later, Fio was eliminated by Arizona State’s Anthony Robles 17-7.
The tournament continues this morning and runs through Saturday.
