The Case Athletic Complex in the south end of Chapman Stadium also features eight luxury suites. Their proximity to the field gave Oklahoma kicker Garrett Hartley something else to aim at while warming up.
Hartley sent a couple at the suite in the middle that was occupied by members of the OU athletic department prior to the game. Associate athletic director Larry Naifeh was the main target.
Hartley missed a 34-yard attempt late in the third quarter. The ball sailed wide left. It was his first miss of the season in three attempts.
He also had a PAT attempt blocked after Juaquin Iglesias’ fourth-quarter touchdown catch. It third botched PAT this season.
1-2-4
OU played at Tulsa for the ninth time Friday night. It marked the third straight time the Sooners have gone up the Turner Turnpike for a game against Tulsa ranked in the top 5.
The Sooners were ranked No. 1 in 1987. They were No. 2 when the teams opened the season in 2002. OU is currently ranked No. 4.
LB at QB
Paul Smith took all but two snaps Friday at quarterback for Tulsa before being pulled in the fourth quarter. The two he didn’t take weren’t given to a backup or even a running back. Linebacker Chris Chamberlain was behind center. The 6-foot-2, 225-pound Chamberlain was stopped for no gain on a rushing attempt on a fourth-and-1 play midway through the first quarter.
He also attempted a pass late in the second quarter.
Quiet night for Kelly
Malcolm Kelly’s string of games with a touchdown catch ended Friday. Kelly caught seven in the first three games, including two last Saturday against Utah State.
Kelly entered the game averaging 100.7 receiving yards a game. He finished with three catches for 48 yards against the Golden Hurricane.
Juaquin Iglesias was the star for the receiver corps. He had eight catches for 142 yards and his first two receiving touchdowns of the season.
Williams leaves early
Defensive end John Williams suffered an ankle injury early in the second half while chasing after Tulsa quarterback Paul Smith. Williams, who entered the game with four tackles for losses and one sack, had his left ankle re-taped twice on the sideline. But did not re-enter the game.
He remained on the sidelines throughout the remainder of the game, but wore an ice pack and was on crutches until the end of the game.
Alan Davis rotated with Auston English and Alonzo Dotson at defensive end after Williams’ injury.
Patrick stays hot
Since recovering from a preseason ankle injury, running back Allen Patrick has been a workhorse. The senior rushed for 145 yards Friday night with touchdown runs of 1 and 29 yards.
The depth at running back might come into play as OU enters Big 12 play next Saturday. Chris Brown, who rushed for 65 yards on nine carries, was knocked out on his final carry, a 14-yard gain, that set up OU’s eighth touchdown early in fourth quarter.
Adams’ night
Former Moore standout Tarrion Adams wasn’t able to get out of the gate. The senior rushed for 208 yards in the Golden Hurricane’s first two games.
He finished with 43 on nine carries Friday night and didn’t find the end zone. Running the ball wasn’t a big part of Tulsa’s game plan after the Sooners’ claimed a two-touchdown lead early in the second quarter.
