Alexander, Ah You taken

The 2007 NFL draft concluded Sunday and two more Oklahoma players found their way onto league rosters.

Linebacker Rufus Alexander was the Minnesota Vikings’ sixth-round selection, meaning the 2006 Big 12 Defensive Player of the Year will remain teammates with Adrian Peterson as long as he makes the team.

“I would think that would make things more comfortable for both of them,” OU coach Bob Stoops said.

Alexander wrapped up his career with 296 tackles, which ranks No. 13 all-time for a Sooner linebacker. He became the first Sooner since Rocky Calmus to lead the team in tackles two straight seasons when he had 102 in 2005 and 116 in 2006.

Alexander was named first team All-America by the American Football Coaches Association this past season.

“Rufus made a lot of plays for us,” Stoops said. “He is a sure tackler with very good closing speed. He got to a lot of ball carriers here and I don’t remember very many of them getting away.”

Defensive end C.J. Ah You was also selected Sunday. He went to the Buffalo Bills in the seventh round.

Ah You registered 41 tackles last season and led the squad with four sacks. He was third in tackles for loss with 8.5.

In 2005, Ah You was the consensus Big 12 Defensive Newcomer of the Year after starting all 12 games. He finished with 45 tackles, including seven sacks.

“He was a smart player that was able to overwhelm a lot of offensive tackles with his strength,” Stoops said of Ah You. “He has a good build from head to toe and is able to generate a lot of drive.”
