FRISCO, Texas — Oklahoma remained perfect in midweek games with a 9-7 victory over Dallas Baptist at Dr. Pepper Ballpark.
The Sooners, who are ranked No. 20 by Baseball America, built a six-run lead early and used their bullpen to hold off the Patriots.
“This was a good win for us because Dallas Baptist was a good club,” OU coach Sunny Golloway said. “It’s important for us to continue to win mid-week games, because it sets us up to be successful in the Big 12 and helps improve our RPI when the postseason rolls around.”
The Sooners are now 6-0 in midweek games to go along with winning 16 of their last 18 games.
Aljay Davis and Jackson Williams helped pave the way for Tuesday’s win. Both had two hits each and drove in six of the Sooners’ nine runs.
Ryan Mottern earned the win with four strikeouts and only allowed one hit to improve to 3-2. Jeremy Parrish (0-1) took the loss for the Patriots with four earned runs allowed on four hits and two walks over the first 3 1/3 innings.
Once the Sooners built a 6-0 lead after their at-bat in the top of the sixth inning, the Patriots made things interesting with three runs in the bottom of the sixth, two in the seventh and two more in the ninth. But the Sooners’ bullpen, led by Nich Conaway’s three strikeouts, did enough to hold the Patriots at bay.
Garrett Richards recorded his Big-12 leading seventh save.
OU returns to L. Dale Mitchell Park to begin Big 12 play against No. 16 Texas A&M; (20-3 overall, 2-1 Big 12). The three-game set begins at 7 p.m. Friday and continues at 3 p.m. Saturday. The series finale is set for 1 p.m. Sunday.
