Oklahoma still isn’t sure how many running backs it will have at its disposal Saturday at Baylor. The only definite is Adrian Peterson won’t be available.
OU coach Bob Stoops said the junior won’t play against the Bears, but added there’s a chance he could be back in uniform for the Nov. 25 regular-season finale at Oklahoma State.
“He’s possible for the Oklahoma State week, but not this week,” Stoops said. “The following week will be six weeks (since the injury). They (OU’s medical staff) will evaluate it next week and see.”
Peterson broke his collarbone Oct. 14 against Iowa State and OU’s medical staff said it would take him 4-to-6 weeks to heal.
The Baylor game will be the fifth contest he’s missed.
His replacement, junior Allen Patrick, is still recovering from a sprained ankle. Patrick sat out of last Saturday’s 34-24 victory over Texas Tech.
Stoops said Patrick practiced in a limited capacity Monday and the injury has improved from where it was last week.
“He did a little bit, but not a lot,” he said. “He’s better, better than he was Friday.”
But there was no indication given about Patrick’s availability for the Baylor game.
Johnson won’t play
Stoops said sophomore wide receiver Manuel Johnson won’t play against Baylor.
Johnson was knocked unconscious by a helmet-to-helmet hit from Texas Tech’s Chris Parker early in the fourth quarter and was hospitalized Saturday night.
He was carted off the field after complaining of “numbness” following the play.
Fellow wide receiver and Johnson’s roommate, Malcolm Kelly, said Johnson’s spirits were pretty good Sunday.
“When he came back home, he was laughing and joking like there wasn’t anything wrong,” Kelly said. “He said all he remembered was getting tackled and waking up in the X-ray room.”
Johnson laid motionless on the field for close to 15 minutes before he was strapped to a cart and taken away.
Kelly admitted those were some agonizing minutes for the Sooners.
“His whole body was still, just like when you see a squirrel laying on the side of the road,” he said. “It scared me.”
Stoops said Johnson will do some conditioning this week, but won’t practice.
Food drive a success
The Holiday Food Drive at Owen Field last Saturday raised $17,600. It was an increase of $7,300 over the previous year.
OU will be distributing food to families this week. Some 500 families throughout Oklahoma will benefit.
