Sloppy day
Oklahoma coach Bob Stoops said he was pleased with his team’s attitude Tuesday morning. The practice was the Sooners’ second in full pads and first of two on the day.
“Guys are working hard like always and competing well,” he said. “We’re just trying to iron some things out.”
But offensive coordinator Kevin Wilson made no attempt to mask his displeasure with what he’d seen.
He called the offense “sloppy” and “soft” after the morning practice.
“We have to establish some toughness and toughness means playing smart,” Wilson said. “It has nothing to do with going out there and hitting somebody. Toughness means you’re smart enough to focus, which means getting the play, making the adjustment, react to the defense and play physical football. That’s what I mean when I say we’re soft. We need to be tough enough mentally.”
Wilson said the harshness of his assessment was because of what happened last season. He wants to put out any negative fires early.
“Last season, we started with a sloppy camp and we started with a sloppy offense,” he said. “We need to stop being sloppy and start being a tough fundamentally sound football team so we have a chance to be a great football team.”
Quarterback Paul Thompson offered the same opinion.
“Today was sloppy, but we’ll watch the film, correct it and move on,” he said.
Barresi still sick
Offensive lineman Ben Barresi missed Tuesday morning’s practice with an undisclosed illness. Stoops wasn’t sure when the redshirt freshman would be able to practice again.
“He’s still working through that illness,” he said.
Scrimmage open
OU’s first scrimmage is scheduled for 6 p.m. Saturday at Owen Field and Stoops said it would be open to the public.
The Sooners have scheduled two preseason scrimmages. The second is slated for Aug. 19. There is no word if it will also be open.
All of OU’s practices remain closed to the public.
