Out for season
OU coach Bob Stoops thought the knee injury defensive end John Williams suffered Saturday would keep him out for the season. Sunday, he made it official. Williams, a sophomore from Houston, will undergo reconstructive surgery on his right knee.
Williams had four tackles, a sack and a fumble recovery against TCU.
The Sooners are already thin at defensive end. Larry Birdine, who was a preseason All-Big 12 selection, was already out with a torn biceps muscle.
Alan Davis, a 6-2, 242-pound redshirt freshman, will move into a three-man defensive end rotation with C.J. Ah You and Calvin Thibodeaux.
OU would like to find another defensive end to emerge and have a four-man rotation. But that could be a problem. Davis wasn’t even expected to be in the mix this season until Birdine was lost.
“Whether or not he’s ready, it’s irrelevant because he’s going to play,” Co-defensive coordinator Brent Venables said. “There’s a pecking order of what you have going into the year. He was where he was and now he is where he is. I feel comfortable with Alan and he’ll be capable of helping us.”
Peterson fine
Running back Adrian Peterson missed two series in the second half with an ankle injury.
Peterson said he was fine after the game Saturday and Stoops said the same Sunday. He even took issue with a report that said Peterson had suffered a high-ankle sprain.
“I saw him walk in and he said he felt pretty decent,” Stoops said. “I don’t know where reports of a high-ankle sprain came from. I don’t think he would have been able to play like he did the rest of the game if he had a high-ankle sprain.”
Millington’s status
Akim Millington shocked the Sooner program early last week when he decided to leave the team prior to the TCU game.
Stoops was asked what for Millington’s status and if there was any chance of him returning.
“No status right now,” Stoops said. “It’s not something I said I’d even consider until after the (TCU) game. It’s after the game and I haven’t seen him. So, I’m assuming he’s quit the team for good and until I know different, we’ll see. I won’t entertain anything until he shows he has a good reason or he can justify what his actions have been.”
