Oklahoma All-America tight end Jermaine Gresham has cartilage damage to his right knee and will not play Saturday against BYU. OU coach Bob Stoops made that announcement Thursday afternoon.
What is in question is how long the senior will be on the sidelines.
According to a press release released Thursday by the university, the "evaluation process is continuing" regarding Gresham's playing status this season.
When the injury occurred hasn't been determined. Gresham was seen by reporters after practice Tuesday in pads and walking without any limp.
Coaches and players are not available to the media on either Thursday or Friday. Neither Stoops nor offensive coordinator Kevin Wilson spoke to reporters Wednesday.
Wednesday night Internet message boards were filled with rumors Gresham was injured and the speculation continued until OU confirmed Gresham's injury around 1:50 p.m. Thursday.
Wilson will have Trent Ratterree and James Hanna listed on the depth chart at tight end, according to the press release from OU.
The absence of Gresham is a big blow to the Sooner offense. He became quarterback Sam Bradford's favorite target last season, catching a team-high 14 touchdown passes and his 66 catches for 950 trailed only team leader Juaquin Iglesias.
Gresham needs just six touchdown catches this season to become the program's all-time leader in TD receptions.
Ratterree, a 6-foot-3, 225-pound sophomore, did not catch a pass last season. Hanna, a 6-foot-4, 243-pound sophomore, caught one pass last season.
There's been no indication OU plans to move Brody Eldridge back to tight end. Eldridge was moved to center when preseason practice began and will start there against the Cougars.
