Mayfield sacrifice lifts Sooners to win

NORMAN — As walk-off victories go, it may have been on the dull side. But every win counts and the Sooners were pleased to take their 3-2 victory over New Mexico State on Tuesday night at L. Dale Mitchell Park.

They got it in the bottom of the ninth inning when Jack Mayfield’s fly ball to right field, once caught, allowed Kolbey Carpenter to dash home.

It was quite the manufactured run and it gave OU a sweep of their two-game series with the Aggies.

Carpenter reached base with a single through the left side of the infield and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt from Anthony Hermelyn.

Next up, New Mexico State tried to turn pinch-hitter Mac James’ grounder into a tag out of Carpenter at third base. Carpenter eluded the tag, everybody was safe and Mayfield’s sac fly soon ended the game.

Left-handed reliever Jacob Evans picked up the win on two innings of perfect relief work. Getting his first career start, Kyle Hayes was effective before giving way to relief help, striking out six over five innings.

The victory pushed the Sooners to 14-4 on the season and dropped the Aggies to 8-10.

OU gets a couple days off before opening a three-game home-field set against Northwestern (La.) State at 6:30 p.m. Friday.
