OU lets lead slip away at Notre Dame

NORMAN — Oklahoma let another late lead slip away Sunday in a 6-5, 11-inning loss to Notre Dame at Jackie Robinson Stadium in Los Angeles.

The loss was the Sooners’ third in the last four games, dropping them to 12-4. The Fighting Irish improved to 10-3.

OU built a 5-4 lead heading into the bottom of the ninth inning. First baseman Kolbey Carpenter went 3-for-4, second baseman Hector Lorenzana went 2-for-3 and third baseman Garrett Carey belted a two-run homer in the fifth inning.

Notre Dame, however extended the game by pushing a run across in the bottom of the ninth and then claiming the win on Kevin DeFilippis’ RBI single in the bottom of the 11th.

Reliever Billy Waltrip took the loss. The left-hander gave up two runs on four over 3.1 innings. Adam Choplick started the game, giving four runs on six hits over five innings.

Dan Slania (2-0) picked up the victory in relief. He held OU scoreless over the 31⁄3 innings.

OU begins a 10-game homestand at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at L. Dale Mitchell Park when it opens a two-game series against New Mexico State. Northwestern State comes to Norman Friday for the start of three-game series.
