Offensive coordinator Kevin Wilson said the reason OU wasn't able to get a play off on the critical fourth-and-goal from the 1-yard line midway through the fourth quarter was due to confusion on the coaching staff's part and with the officiating crew.
After Landry Jones' sneak attempt failed on third down, a BYU player grabbed the ball and ran to the sidelines. The play wasn't ruled a fumble. Usually when there's a delay in the officials getting the ball, the play clock is held and reset to 25 seconds after the ball was put in play.
The officials instead decided to wind the 40-second play clock right after Jones' sneak attempt.
"We were totally taken off guard by that delay. We did not sense the mechanics that the play was in late, that we were in jeopardy. That's four points," Wilson said. "We went up there and wanted to see where they were, saw where they were, thought we had a nice play called to get to, and just didn't get it off. And that's my fault. I did not see the clock. I did not assess the clock was running down."
No chunks
One of the biggest concerns for OU offense after Saturday's game was it's utter lack of big plays.
The Sooners didn't have one single play go for more than 18 yards. The Cougars had four.
The only Sooner receiver who had a decent night was Brandon Caleb. He caught four balls for 57 yards. No one else had more than 26 receiving yards, including Ryan Broyles and Adron Tennell.
"We had a hard time getting the other guys going. We had a couple drops. Playing behind chains, we didn't get anything into rhythm. We had some three-and-outs because of procedures where it was wasted plays, and holding penalties making it first-and-25. There wasn't the opportunities to get in rhythm," Wilson said. "That group needs to play better ... The coaching needs to be better and the players need to play better."
Not always the case
Coaches often say the turnover battle is about the biggest statistic in football. Whichever team gets more takeaways than it gives up usually wins.
That wasn't the case Saturday night. OU forced four BYU turnovers (two interceptions and two fumble recoveries). BYU came up with two (two fumble recoveries).
"When you have guys that are disruptive, playing hard and being sure of themselves, you have those opportunities," OU defensive coordinator Brent Venables said.
