NORMAN — Oklahoma’s initial mid-week road game turned into its first mid-week loss Tuesday. The Sooners were held to five hits in a 6-1 loss at Texas-Arlington.
The loss dropped OU to 11-2 and came at the start of a four-game road trip. The Sooners travel to Los Angeles on Friday to face USC, UCLA and Notre Dame over the weekend.
The Sooners had a rocky night on the mound. Ethan Carnes lasted two innings and gave up two runs on four hits. The left-hander took the loss, dropping to 0-1. The runs Carnes allowed were in the second inning. Back-to-back RBI singles from Daniel Garcia and Travis Sibley gave the Mavericks (8-4) all the runs they needed. Texas-Arlington had 11 hits on the night, with eight of its nine starters picking up at least one.
Ralph Garza Jr. entered in the third inning and allowed three runs on four hits over 21⁄3 innings. By the time he exited, Texas-Arlington had built a five-run lead.
OU avoided a shutout with Jack Mayfield’s RBI single in the top of the sixth inning, but the Sooners didn’t have many run-scoring opportunities. They only stranded six on base.
Chase Weaver recorded the win. He held OU to one run on two hits over 51⁄3 innings. He also struck out five. John Beck gave up the other three hits, but didn’t allow a run over the final three innings, getting his first save.
