NORMAN — Oklahoma’s winning streak had to end at some point. Saturday turned out to be the day. The Sooners fell 7-2 to Pepperdine at L. Dale Mitchell Park. The loss ended a 10-game winning streak to start the season.
The Waves improved to 7-4 with the win and evened the three-game series at one game apiece.
OU’s Matt Oberste continued his searing start to the season, going 3-for-4 with a triple and his team-leading fourth home run of the year. The two-time reigning Big 12 Conference Player of the Week has hit safely in all 11 games and has posted a team-high six multi-hit games so far in 2013.
First baseman Kolbey Carpenter tallied a career-high three hits while center field Craig Aikin contributed two hits.
Jonathan Gray (2-1) struck out seven over six innings but was saddled with the loss. He gave up three runs on five hits.
Pepperdine grabbed an early 2-0 advantage in the first inning, but OU clawed back to even with a run in the third and another in the fifth. The Waves went back in front, 3-2, in the top of the sixth, then plated four more insurance runs in the ninth.
Corey Miller (2-1) held the Sooners to two runs on eight hits to get the win.
The teams return to L. Dale Mitchell Park at 1 p.m. today for the rubber game of the three-game set.
