Sooners top tough field in Colorado

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — Oklahoma opened its men’s gymnastics season Saturday with its 14th consecutive Rocky Mountain Open Championship.

The third-ranked Sooners scored 423.500 to knock off No. 9 Nebraska, No. 11 Air Force and Arizona State at the U.S. Air Force Academy.

“I thought we were pretty good on four events,” coach Mark Williams said. “We let things slide a little bit on high bar and floor, but given that we had to step up around Dylan Akers’ injury, I was pleased with the overall performance.

“We had an event champion on every event, and Alec Robin won the all-around, so I’m pleased with that. In the end, the pommel horse team stepped up when the meet was still undecided.”

Even without Akers, who was a late scratch, the Sooners posted the top team score on pommel horse (71.750), rings (71.500), parallel bars (70.500) and high bar (67.900). Oklahoma and Air Force shared the high score on vault with a 72.950.

Robin, a sophomore, took the all-around event title with a score of 80.950, extending the streak to 14 straight years that a Sooner has been all-around champion at the event.
