Gasso signs pair of recruits

NORMAN — Oklahoma softball coach Patty Gasso added two signees to the Class of 2013, she announced on Wednesday.

Maggie Ham, of George West, Texas, and Tyler Lucas of Oklahoma City, will join the Sooners next year. Ham comes to OU after spending her freshman season pitching at Louisiana-Lafayette, while Lucas is a senior at Bethany High School.

Ham pitched 1.2 innings over two appearances in her freshman year, giving up two hits and one run in that stretch.

“We believe that Maggie will really help solidify this pitching staff,” Gasso said. “She can throw the ball hard, but also move the ball around. She’s a focused competitor that has the drive to be great and we’re really excited to have her.”

Lucas has enjoyed a prolific high school career at Bethany, batting .550 with 22 RBIs and 10 home runs in her junior year. In addition to her batting numbers, Lucas’ ability to play multiple positions played a large role in the signing.

“Tyler appealed to me immediately because of her athletic look on the field,” Gasso said. “I’ve seen her play shortstop and second base. She’s very smooth and effortless in the field. Offensively, she has really elevated her game. She has game-changing power and speed, which makes her an outstanding all-around athlete.”
