Cavs top Black Knights in opener

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. — Branden Cogswell drove in four runs, while Branden Kline pitched 5 2/3 solid innings to help top-seeded Virginia roll past Army 9-1 in the opening game of the Charlottesville Regional.

The game resumed Saturday afternoon after being halted by rain after a half inning of play Friday.

Kline (7-3) pitched an inning Friday before the game was halted. The senior allowed six hits and one earned run. Kyle Crockett and Austin Young combined to hold the Black Knights (41-14) scoreless over the 3 1/3 innings.

Army ace Chris Rowley (11-1) also came back after throwing eight pitches on Friday, but struggled on Saturday. He walked five, hit four and allowed five hits, the last was Cogswell’s three-run double in the sixth that made it 6-1.

Cogswell also got hit by a pitch with the bases full in a three-run second. Brandon Downes went 3-for-4 and Stephen Bruno went 3-for-5 for the Cavailiers, who improved to 39-17-1 with the victory.
